Dr. Cervantes brings a wealth of experience to our district representing us across a five-county region with CSU, UC, Community College, K-12, Employer, and community partners.

Prior to joining CLPCCD, Dr. Agustín Cervantes served as the Director of Student Services for the College of Education at California State University, Los Angeles.  He was responsible for the management and leadership of outreach, community relations, academic and career advisement, and statewide credential (licensing) including programs in teacher training, bilingual education, and dual enrollment instructor preparation. In 2022, he was appointed to serve as a member of the Committee on Accreditation by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. He continues to serve in this role.

Beyond his work at Cal State LA, Dr. Agustín Cervantes has taught dual enrollment coursework in Child Development at East Los Angeles College.  His past experience includes serving as the Director of Outreach and Enrollment Services for The National Hispanic University throughout California and in Arizona, Texas, and Puerto Rico. He has led transfer articulation initiatives for Walden University.  Dr. Cervantes' work allowed him to implement equity-minded strategies that allowed students to enroll with ease into each educational or community program, whether they were coming from a comprehensive high school, alternative adult school, community college, or the professional sector. 

Dr. Agustín Cervantes is originally from east Los Angeles and attended Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights. He started his career in higher education working for the Vice Provost for Student Affairs at Stanford University where he served as Associate Director of El Centro Chicano & Latino.  While at Stanford University, he was also a Residential Advisor with The Haas Center for Public Service in the Upward Bound Program, a college-bound, federal funded educational program. In 2012, he was named “Educator of the Year” by the Association for Mexican American Educators, Inc. – Silicon Valley Chapter. His research interests include competency-based learning, andragogical strategies, workforce education, social capital and civic engagement, as well as teacher recruitment, retention, and motivation.  He is also a strong proponent of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives in higher education and beyond.  Dr. Agustín Cervantes holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Urban Studies and Spanish and Portuguese, and a Master of Arts degree in Education from Stanford University, as well as a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership from the University of California, Los Angeles.
